Runners are people who are being stalked by Fears. They are under constant threat of death, and various Fears chase Runners in various ways, from sending servants to torment, to attacking the Runner themselves, to quietly dispatching Runners through trusted people.
Runners will often live in denial if other Runners try to contact them, and Runners who actually do seek help often run in circles until the Fear drives them mad and takes them as Servants or sending them to their dooms.
There are are no official groups of Runners, normally only two or three friends together trying to survive. However, sometimes Runners find communities they can associate with and work together, sharing experiences and information.
